The first Nesmith to enter the United States was John Nesmith, a Scot from Scotland. The year was 1683. Several Nesmith genealogy researchers searching for decades have not discovered a previous Nesmith as of this writing in 2008. Several pieces of information about the Nesmith have been gleaned. Very few families are able to ascertain as much information.
We know the following about this John Nesmith. He arrived at Perth Amboy, NJ, or States Island, on December 19, 1683. Perth Amboy is on the NJ shore across from the south end of States Island. John came over on the ship Exchange capatained by James Peacock. The ship sailed from Aberdeen, Scotland in August 1983. Alberdeen is on the east or North Sea side of Scotland. Thirty one men and women servants financed thier passage by indentured for four years. They were indentured for four or more years. John Nesmith was indentured for four years. Overseers were John Reed and John Hampton. Reed was the principal overseer since he acts as attorney in fact for Robert Barclay, the proprietor of East New Jersey.
Indentured servants were usually adult white persons who were bound to labor for a period of years, usually three to five years, to secure passage to America. Reasons for coming were proverty, political, and religious. Some paupers and convicts were sentenced to deportation. Most of the colonies regulated the treatment of indentured servants.
We know this about John Nesmith from a handwritten record giving the above information on file in the Archives & and History Bureau, New Jersey State Library, at Trenton, NJ. This writer has a copy of the document. The writing is intact, but difficult to read due to the handwriting style and terminology of the period. In addition, overseer Reed left this memorandum of thier departure from Scotland, and the voyage to America: :We went to Leigh for our voyage to America the 2nd of August, 1683. Came abroad the ship the 10th day and the next day at Alberdeen, where we stayed until the 28th. made sight of Long Island the 30th November but off again and discovered Cape May 13th December. Came within Sandy Hook the 16th and ashore on States Island the 19th. To Elizabethttown the 23rd and to Woodbridge the 10 January 1683/4."
John was single as seemed to be the case with most of the passsengers. He could have been as young as 14-15 years of age, but was probably closer to 18. If he were this age range, he would have been born 1665-1670. John later had children, but the name of his wife is unknown.
In 1684 small tracts of land were laid out at Perth Amboy and Changerora. John likely lived on one of the tracts temporarily while fulfilling his indenture time. A handwritten "deed" dated May 10, 1688, list John as one of the group from East Jersey to Robert Barclay for head lands coming to them. Apparently this was a formality. A subsequent deed dated June 24, 1688, from Barclay, executed by Reid as Barclay's attorney, to John Nesmith for land at Topenemus. John's four years of indenture service is finished in 1688 and he recieves 100 acres of head lands.
Minutes of the Broad of Proprietors of East New Jersey (NJ was divided into East and West NJ) shows that a meeting and council of the proprietors occurred on May 12, 1687, at Perth Amboy. The seven council members present met to consider and approve petitions of the Scott Proprietors' servants for head lands. John Nesmith is listed among others. The tracts surveyed to them appears to be 100 acres each.
Topenemus is a small community to the east and very close to Freehold, the county seat of Monmouth County. this is between 15-20 miles due south of Perth Amboy. John Braird, one of the indentured passengers on the ship with Nesmith, becomes and adjoining property owner at Topenemus. John Braird was single but later marries a Mary Hall. The Chelsea Title & Guaranty Company furnished a quitclaim deed, dated May 25, 1714. Nesmith and Braird executed a release to each other. Both mutually executed the insturment for the purpose of correcting thier property line at Topenemus. It is witnessed by John Reid and John Brown. A memorandum to the deed is dated June 3, 1714, whereby John Reid, appears before Thomas Gordon, one of Her Majesties Counsel (Queen Anne of England) for the Province of New Jersey, for the purpose of confirming the deed.
Putting all the information together to John's property ownership, it is clear that the owned three parcels in Monmouth County -a small dock lot (or right to dock use) on Matawan Creek, which runs into the ocean north of Matawan; a 4.5 acre town lot at what is now Ferneau, just south of Matawan; and 100 acres at Topenemus, near Freehold. The Middletown Point property referred to in one deed to property sold by John Nesmith in 1714, is located in what is now known as Matawan and not Middletown.
New Jersey Supreme Court Minutes-Case 27990, bearing dates March 4 & August 18, concerns what appears to be a case whereby John Nesmith of Topenemus, sues John McConnoll of Freehold, for a debt of some kind. The Minutes are signed or directed by Robert Hunter Morris, Chief Justice, at Perth Amboy, in the 12th year of the reign of King George 11. This would be ca. 1739. This is the last known piece of information regarding John that this compiler has that can be dated. However, the New Jersey Archieves listing Calender of Wills for 1730-1750 gives information regarding the estate of Henry Van Hook. His Will leaves a son land at Middletown Point (Matawan) that he had bought from John Nesmith. This does not tell us what date he purchased it.
It would seem, based on a total lack of information indicating otherwise, that John and his wife probably remained and died in the Freehold area. Provided he was born ca. 1665, he would now be about 74 years of age, and not likely to be moving elsewhere. Baird, Reid, and Hampton remained in the Freehold area. It, of course, can be speculated that the John indicated in the 1739 proceeding was the son of the first John who had not yet moved to PA. It is my feeling, however, that is not the case.
A good genealogical record exists for John Baird's Family of topenemus. It mentions John Nesmith. It states that Bairds tombstone at Topenemus bears inscription that he came from Scotland, age 18, died April, 1755, about 90 years old. It can be speculated that Nesmith was also close in age to Baird when they left Scotland. Asssuming he was the same age, his birth would have been in 1665. The Nesmith and Bairds were close families in Scotland and intermarried. It is concieveable they were related.
Printed genealogical records for the John Hampton Family. It also sets forth the memorandum written by overseer John Reid that is quoted above.
A good printed genealogical record of John Reid exists. It states that he married Margaret Miller in Scotland, and that they came to East New Jersey when he was 28 years of age. He had three daughters at the time. Shortly after arriving, he was appionted Deputy Surveyor of East New Jersey by George Keith. He later became Surveyor General. Reid and his wife were converted to Quakerism while in Scotland. Initially, Reid and the Amboy Friends Meeting. But he later joined the Episcopal Church under the influence of George Keith.
Donald Whyte, Chairman of Council of The Scottish Genealogical Society, informed me in January, 1983, that he is from the same Parish of Kirkliston as Reid was. He advised that Reid was a gardener, and confirmed Reid's emigration facts given herein. He advised that there were 31 indentured passengers on the ship Exchange, and that indentured servants could be as young as 14.
Reid is buried in the Old Topenemus grave yard, located about a mile west of the Village of Marlborough. Geo. Keith was originally a Presbyterian, became a Quaker, and finally a Episcopalian clergyman. He settled near Topenemus and established a Quaker Meeting House which later became the neucleus of St. Peters Episcopal Church of Freehold. Keith later moved to the Philadelphia area. A number of the early settlers of New Jersey were Quakers, including the well known family of Nathaniel Fritz_Randolph, who lived in Woodbridge. Fritz-Randolph, in his Will executed May 3, 1713, leaves a bequest og sheep to his son Benjamin, Joseph Hamilton, his "son-in law", and Thomas Nesmith share and share alike. There obviously was a close connection of some kind. This information is set forth to show the personal and religous environment in which the Nesmith lived. This tidbit may also indicate Thomas was born around 1700, that he was the oldest son, and that he could have been a Quaker before becoming a Presbyterian. He was not babtized as a Presbyterian until he married and had a child.
Fritz-Randolph's "son-in-law," mentioned in his Will was actually his young 14-15 year old stepson. Joseph Hamilton was a "favorite" son of Jane Fritz_Randolph by her previous husband, John Hamilton, who had lived at Freehold in January 1702. Joseph Hamilton was born at Freehold in 1702. Fritz-Randolph died in 1714. Jane remarried again to a John Sharp. She continued to belong to Quaker congregations in NJ and Bucks County PA. John Nesmith and his wife had three sons and probably four, born at or near Freehold. Records exists showing that the sons moved to Philadelphia area during or around the 1730's. It is believed that he had one daughter, and possibly two. The sons and daughter;s names, not necessarily listed according to birth are:
1. Thomas Nesmith -b. ca. 1698-1702 in NJ, d. during or after 1783 in PA, m. 1st to Dorcas___, 2nd to Sarah__,
2. Alexander Nesmith-b. ca. 1700-1710, d. between 18th & 25th April 1751 in Pa
3.. John Nesmith-c.ca. 1700-1719, m. Sarah Dyke 2 December 1751
4. Arthur Nesmith-b.ca.1708, d. 2 June 1775 in Philadelphia County, PA, m. Eleanor McNear 27th September 1744
5. Anne Nesmith-b. 1721 d. 3 December 1806 in Philadelphia (age 85)
ALEXANDER NESMITH
The above Alexander lived and died a resident of Peters Township, Cumberland County, PA. He died between April 18, 1751, the date he executed his Will, and April 25, 1751, the date Letters Testamentary were issued. He was sick and dyiong when he executed his Will. He was single, no children, and apparently never married. Cumberland County, adjoined Adams County, where thomas moved sometimes following the death of his 1st wife. Alexander left a bequest to his brother Thomas'son, John. John was Thomas' first son. It will be noted here that it was a common naming pattern at the time to name the first son after the son's grandfather> He also leaves a bequest to his brother Arthur. He mentions Joseph Miles. Miles was married to his niece Ann and 3rd December, 1750. He also leaves his tract of land to Elizabeth Irwin that was sold to him by James Irwin. there is basis for speculation that Elizabeth was possibly is sister and married to Irwin, He names James Irwin one of his co-executors.
ARTHUR NESMITH
The above named Arhur, b. 1708, married Eleanor McNear on 27 mSeptember, 1744, at the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Arthur died 2 January 1775, age 67. Eleanor died 4 September 1759. Both are buried at Trinity, Episcopal Church Cementery, Montgomery County, PA. They had settled in Oxford Township, Philsdelphia County, in 1756, and aquired a 180 acre farm which he owned when he died.
In September 1743, a 216 acre parcel located in Antrim Twp, Lancaster County, (subquently Cumberland County) was surveyed for a James McConnell, Back Creek borders on one side. Because McConnell did not fulfill the conditions of the warrant, the survey was vacated on September 26, 1749, for the use of Arthur Nesmith, for one share and the heirs of James Stephenson for one share. Stephenson had aquired the property, then died in his Will left the said property to two minor sons, John and William. Arthur Nesmith was named the executor, and held the property in trust until the sons reached adult age.
On 31 August 1746, robert M. Cook, and indentured servant from Ireland, was assigned to Arthur for seven years in consideration of part of customary dues.
Arthur and Eleanor had the following children:
1. Arthur Jr - born ca 1745, married Ann Dilworth. Arthur Jr. executed his Will on Feb. 15, 1787. He names three children-Elizabeth, Arthur Jr., and Alexander. He appoints two friends as executors. Probate is granted on March 10, 1787. Arthur died less than a month after he made his Will, a resident of Oxford Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery). This is near Abington. Alexander died in 1814, a resident of Oxford Township. His sister Elizabeth Vanhorn was appionted administrator of his estate. Alexander died intestate and appears he was single.
2. Martha - born ca. 1747, married Christian Fesmire (age 32). The ceremony is recorded in the records of St. Micheals's and Zoin Lutheran Church 10 June 1765. Oxford Township became thier home from then on. Martha inherited part of her parents farm when her father died in 1775. It is believed that Martha and Christian are buried in the same cementery as her parents. They had the following children: Eleanore b. Jan 1766: Johannes b. Dec 1767: Anna b. Feb 1772: Martha b. Oct 1774: Christian b. Nov 1776. All five were christened on 13 April 1780 at the St. Micheals Lutheran Church in Germantown. Fesmire was a German. The olest child baptized or christened was then 14 and the youngest 21/2. It is speculated that the baptisms were delayed due to the war and occupation by the British. Christian was a farmer and died in 1797. The two youngest children died between 1780-1797 when Christian died. Considerable published genealogical information exists for the decendants of Martha and Christain.
JOHN NESMITH
John Nesmith, believed to be the son of the 1st John, married Sarah Dyke on 2 Dec 1751, at the Gloria Dei Church (aka Old Swedes) in Philadelphia. Gloria Dei is a landmark. episcopal church. Provided this John is the son of the first John and he was born ca.1710-1720, then he would be 31-41 years old at marriage. This John does not fit anywhere other than been a son of the first John. The common naming pattern at the time was the third son after the father. We, of course, do not know whether this John was the third son. In as much as we do not seem to have any additional informationre this John, it could easily be speculated that he died subsequent to his marriage and without children. His "brother" Thomas' wife Dorcas died at the end of 1749. We do not know when Thomas remarried, but we do know that he was remarried by 1769 to a Sarah. Could it be that this Sarah was the widow of John? If she was, she did not have to change her name. I do not know of any offspring of this marriage, and no known information exists putting him in SC or anywhee else.
ANNE NESMITH
Anne above, born in 1721, is listed as a daughter because she does not fit anywhere else. She apparently never married and died in 1806, age 85, at Alms House, Philadelphia, PA. She is buried at First Presbyterian Cementery. The first Alms house was established in Philadelphia in 1713 on Walnut Street, near Fourth, by Friend and Quakers. The purpose was to provide housing and/or jobs for the poor. The poor and handicapped of all faiths were welcome. The alms house of Philadelphia have an interesting history. They eventually came under control of the City and County of Philadelphia.
THOMAS NESMITH
2nd generation
Thomas married 1st Dorcas, aka Tabitha, perhaps in 1731. Old Tennent Presbyterian Church, located near Freehold, has babtismal records showing Thomas was babtized on 19 July 1732, as an adult. anne, daughter of Thomas, was christened the same date. Margaret, daughter of Thomas, was christened 26 May 1734. Some speculate that Dorcas was a Foster: others that she was a Perry, but I have not seen creditable evidence to support this for either.
John Stillwell's book, "Historical & Genealogical Miscellany," re Browne of Monmouth County shows Peter Browe purchased land in Freehold on May 10, 1734, for 495 pounds from Thomas Nesmith of Freehold, with the consent of Nesmith's brother. this indicates one brother had some kind of interest in the property. I have not seen a copy of this deed. No further records for these Nesmiths are extant in Monmouth County. How, when, and from whom thomas aquired the property is unknown.
This thomas and wife Dorcas, purchased 138 acres in Abington, Cheltenharn Twp., Montgomery County, (originally Philadelphia County) just north and near Philadelphia, on 24 Dec 1734, from David and Elizabeth Perry. The property bordered Takony Creek. they paid 300 pounds. They have now moved here from Freehold, NJ. Thomas and Dorcas had the following children:
1. Anne - born 18 May and christened 19 July 1732 in NJ, married Joseph Miles 3 Dec 1750 in Philadelphia at Gloria Dei (Old Swede) Church. She died 20 Dec 1821 in the 90th year of her age. Anne and Joseph are both buried at Penneypack Babtist Church, Bustletown, Philadelphia County, PA. Considerable genealocial information exists for the decendants of Anne and Joseph. an unpublished typescript at the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania on the Miles family states that thier first child, Lucy, was born 27 Dec 1750 and died 11 Feb 1751. It is speculated that this could be the reason for the marriage at Gloria Dei and not Abington.
2. Margaret - born prior to 26 May 1734, date she was christened in NJ, supposedly married John Hall of Philadelphia. Halls had lived in the Freehold area when the Nesmiths did.
3. John - born just prior to 6 March 1737, date he was christened in Abington, PA, married Margaret Yerkes, born in 1736, a widow, on 17 Jan 1764, at the Abington Presbyterian Church. Margaret's maiden name was Paul. she was previously married to a Yerkes. John would be 24 years old. John and Margaret remained in Montgomery County. John was a miller as was his dad. He died just prior to 1 Sept 1714. It is possible he died at the end of August 1714. This is based on the fact that on 1 Sept 1814, Margaret, his widow, executed in Montgomery County, a renunciation to act as administratot of his estate in favor of her son, Titus Yerkes. Inventory of his estate was done on 4 Sept 1714. Titus was a son by her first husband. Margaret died around January, 1823, per inventory of her estate in Montgomery County, PA dated 30 January 1823. Margaret had two children while married to Titus Yerkes. John and Margaret had three daughters, but no sons, so the Nesmith line ended.
John was Thomas' first son. Again, it was then the common naming practice to name the first son after the son's grandfather, further indication that the first John was his grandfather. John saw service as a soldier in the american Revolution War. his name is on the list of soldiers of the Revelution prepared in for "Depreciation Account." On 27 May 1791, John is in a Pay Account approved by the Govenor for seven months of service as new levy in Federal Army in the year of 1780. John is also shown on Master Roll of Major Bird's Company, First Regiment of Foot, in the Pay of the Province of Pennsylvania. He enlisted 27 April 1756, age 20. The age fits for this John. John is shown as a volunteer, 6th Btn. and District 1780 (he would be 44 years old). He is also shown as a private on Master Roll, Sixth Co. 7th Btn., Philadelphia militia 1788.
4. Jane - christened 28 Oct 1738, at Abington Presbyterian Church, is said by one researcher to have married a Carson of Canberry, NJ. Canberry is a small village or town southwest and near Freehold.
6. Thomas - b. 22 Nov 1741 d. 7 Oct 1814 in Madison County, Alabama. Considerable printed genealogical information exists for this Thomas and his decendants.
7. William - christened 17 May 1744, Abington Presbyterian Church. He was five years old when his Mother died in 1749. It is speculated William died young and never marrried as no further information is found of him.
Thomas and Dorcas attended the Abington Presbyterian Church founded in 1714. The Abington Church is 11 miles north of Philadelphia City Hall. Thier son John is christened on 6 March 1737: daughter Jane is Christened 28 Oct 1739: son Thomas born 23 Nov 1741 is christened 17 Dec. 1741 per church records.
Thomas and Dorcas gave a mortage to Richard Martin on 4 June 1737. On 16 April, 1747, Susanna Martin, widow of Richard Martin, executed a release of satisfaction of the mortage to Thomas. The Martins owned the adjoining land and operated a mill. thomas apparently worked at the mill.
25 May 1744, Thomas and Dorcas (aka Tabitha) gave a deed or mortage to Joseph Paul to 65.5 acres for 189 pounds20 Feb 1745, Thomas and Dorcas gave a mortage to Tench Francis to 72.5 acres for 100 pounds.
Thomas and Dorcas (Tabitha) were in the process of selling their Abington property in October, 1749. He and Dorcas executed an indenture to Peter Haig on 25 Oct 1749 for 72.5 acres. On 14 Nov 1749 Susanna Martin recorded her mortage as satisfied. On 13 Dec. 1749 Trench Francis recorded his mortage as satisfied. Dorcas died between 25 Oct. 1749 and 20 Dec. 1749, when the sale is completed. The deed acknowledged andrecorded on 20 Dec. 1749, mentions this. Thomas recieved 300 pounds. He is now left with six children from age 5 to 17. He and Dorcas had advertised the sale of 140 acres in 1743. They sold approximately half in 1744 and the other half in 1749.
Benjamin Franklin was a resident of Philadelphia during the time Thomas and Dorcas resided in nearby Abington. Franklin published a weekly newspaper called "The Pennsylvania Gazette". The Aug 3-10, 1738 paper carried this notice or advertisement: "A likely servant lad's time, he is about 15 years of age, to be disposed of for near six years. Inquire of Thomas Nesmith, at Richard's Martin Mill, in Cheltenham, Philadelphia County. Or Isaac Williams in this City, where the boy may be seen and the conditions of sale known." indentured servant contracts could be sold. It would appear that this concerned such. The boy's contract may have been for seven years.
Cheltenham Township, for information purposes, was originially in Philadelphia County, but later Montgomery County after Montgomery County was formed. The formation of new counties from established counties were common in the early formation of counties.
Franklin's paper, dated September 15, 1743, carried the following advertisement. "To be Sold. A good plantation, containing 140 acres of very good land, a good dwelling house, barn, out-houses, orchard, and about 10 acres of meadow made, and as much more may be made: about 10 acres of clear land well fenced, the rest well timber's, the well watere'd with living springs that never fail. Situate in the Township of Cheltenham, near Richards Martin's Mill, one mile from Orchard Church, and eight from Philadelphia. To be sold all together, or in parcels, by Thomas Nesmith."
The population of Philadelphia in 1790, the time of the first U.S. census, was only approximately 30,000, much less in the 1740's. It is possible that Thomas Nesmith saw Franklin.
Mrs. Robert (Jean Nesmith) Beck furnished pictures to me of the area of Richard Martin's Mill, taken in 1985. Mrs. Beck is a decendant of our first Thomas by his last known child Isaac, and she collected much Nesmith family genealogy. A street sign says Martin Hill Road. A shovel shop is on the corner and a sign reads Mills of Cheltenham. This would be part of the original Richard Martin Mill. Another picture shows TaconyCreek, a beautiful stream flowing over a small fall, near remains of Martin's Mill. Another picture is of the Abington Church takren from across the street in the Church Cementery. Another picture is of a historical sign on the Church property re its founding in 1714.
Thomas married again to a Sarah sometime following the death of Dorcas. He and Sarah have one known child, Isaac, born 1761. This may have been the only child of sarah's as no others are known. When Thomas remarried is unknown, but it would have been 1760 or prior. Who Sarah was before her marriage is unknown, but it would have been speculated that she was the widow of Thomas' brother John. Thomas may or may not have moved to the Gettysburg area until 1768. Considerable information has been collected about this Isaac and his decendants. Thomas and his 2nd wife purchased 147 acres in Mount Pleasant Township, York County, (later Adam County), near Gettsburg, in 1768. They buy an adjoining 88.5 acres in 1769. A copy of the survey of the property, dated 18 Nov 1766, and also showing date of 5 July, 1768, is in my pocession. This property was called White Run and is specifically located. the property is located just west of Granite Station Road: north of PA road 116: northwest and near the town of Bonneauville. In 1685 the former Nesmith lands were owned by Charles W. Keller and Theron Dayhoff. Jean Beck, about this time, visited with the Dayhoffs, and took pictures of thier beautiful farm, called White Run Farm. White Run Creek runs thru the farms.
It is not known when the first Thomas and Sarah died. Information exists, however, for good speculation. The presbyterian cementeries in the area of Mount Pleasant Township have been checked and are negative as to early Nesmiths. Nesmith is not found on 1779 tax records of Mt. Pleasant. However, the PA archives shows Thomas Nesmith and three people, including Isaac, in Cumberland Township in 1783 with 100 acres. This township became part of Adams County on its formation in 1800. Perhaps Cumberland was originally part of Mt Pleasant Twp, Isaac is shown to be in the 1790 census for Montgomery County, but not afterward. Could this Thomas be the same one? It can be speculated that Thomas moved back to his previous area in his old age and died during or subsequent to 1790. He still has close family members living here.
What happened to Thomas and wife Sarah? They were in Adams County in 1783 with 100 acres. Surveys for the mid 1760's show two parcels totaling 235 acres. What happened to the other 130-35 acres? Perhaps by 1783 Thomas and Sarah subsequently sold the 100 acres and moved back to Montgomery County in 1783 or after? Isaac mortages 130 acres in Adams County in 1786. It appears that this is the balance of the Nesmith property in Adams County. Isaac had somehow come into pocession of 130 acres.
The first mandated census of 1790 for PA shows only one Thomas Nesmith and the location is Montgomery County. It showed one male, including head of household over 16 years of age, one male under 16. It shows two females, including head of household, but no age indicated. This could be Sarah or perhaps Ann Nesmith, believed to be sister of Thomas who never married. Anne would be 69 at the time and is not shown on a census as head of hoiusehold. This raises the question as to whether this was our first Thomas and who the one under 16 is.
In order to be possible confusion to other researchers regarding Thomas Nesmith, the Pennsylvania Archives show another Thomas Nesmith in PA prior to 1790 as well as a Jesse Nesmith. I have information indicating that these two Nesmiths are decendants of the James who came from NH. This Thomas is shown as a member of Chester County Militia, Township of Radnor, in June 1780. This is southwest of Philadelphia and Radnor was later a part of Delaware County. Thomas is shown in 1784 in Northhampton County, which today is Montgomery County. He is shown again in Washington County, Township of Upper Dublin, on a list of male white inhabitants between the ages of 18 and 53 capable of bearing arms. Washington County is southwest of Pittsburg. The age does not fit for our Thomas.
ISAAC NESMITH
Isaac may have gone to Frederick, MD, due south of Gettysburg, to work where he met and married Nancy Ann Johnson, daughter of Benjamin Johnson, and a niece of Thomas Johnson, the first govenor of Maryland. Thomas Johnson, a friend of Washington, was appionted to the U.S. Supreme Court by Washington. But due to his age and the fact that the Court traveled a circuit at the time, he resigned after one year. The Johnsons owned iron and glass works in Frederick County. Isaac was born 30 Jan 1761, perhaps in what today is Adams County, PA. Nancy Ann Johnson was born in Frederick County, Md on 9 July 1766. Sometimes Ann is used and Sometimes Nancy is used. Her father was Colonel Benjamin Johnson, a Revelutionary War soldier. They were married 27 Dec. 1791, at Bush Creek Forge in Frederick County, MD. Ann's first cousin, Louisa Johnson, was the wife of John Quincy Adams, the 6th President, 1825-1829. Isaac and Ann are found living in Washington for a period of time, and Nancy lived there at times after Isaac died. They obviously had Washington connections through the Johnson and Adams families.
Isaac and Nancy Ann Nesmith's son, Thomas Johnson Nesmith, was born in Washington, D.C. on 6 Nov. 1795. A verbal family history, dictated by Phobe Woods Nesmith, on file at the Uniontown Public Library, contains the following statement. "When George Washington rode through the City, Ann Nesmith held her son Thomas up in her arms to see the father of his country." The veracity of this is in question since the history contained several errors, however Washington was President at that time. It would be difficult to doubt the veracity of Thomas Johnson being a son. Phoebe was a great-granddaughter who never married and died in 1931. [Some family members dispute the validity of this letter being dictated by Phebe Wood Nesmith. No dispute on Thomas Johnson Nesmith being a child of Isaac and Nancy Ann Nesmith, only the validity of the letter.]
On 4 Feb. 1786, Issac Nesmith, single and 25 years of age, executed a mortgage in 130 acres, "more or less," together with buildings and improvements, to Peter WOLFORD to secure a loan. The loan was subsequently satisfied. The "indenture" does not set forth a legal description, but does state Mount Pleasant Township, York County. It can be logically....... (End of p. 10.
